What is a professional resume and why do you need one? It is entirely a matter of effective content. Gone are the days, when you could submit a resume with roles and responsibilities and expect to be selected over your competition. After all, they have the same experience and are performing the same duties.
Your resume may also unfortunately be rejected by applicant tracking software because it does not contain the appropriate keywords, even though you may possess the requested skills and qualifications listed in the vacancy posting.

Your resume has about 6 seconds to make an impression, so every effort should be made to avoid mistakes. Aside from bad grammar, punctuation errors and typos, here is a list of the most grievous sins. These mistakes could also immediately disqualify you.
1. Lengthy document – if your resume cannot be scanned in 6 seconds, then you may be passed over. Try to stick to 2-3 pages maximum, if your resume is longer than that, then you need to edit and/or eliminate content.
2. Using an inappropriate email address – Yes, people still do this. Email is the preferred modern day form of communication. There is no excuse for using juvenile addresses, i.e. “sexy@…” or “princess@…” Your email address should be a standard variation of your name.
3. Including your headshot – Unless you’re in a profession where your looks affect the work you get, such as acting or modeling, you should never include a photo on your resume. This practice significantly increases the possibility that you will be discriminated against. Your picture will also draw too much attention and you want the attention to be focused on your skills and qualifications. Remember you only have 6 seconds to make an impression, more to the point, make a good impression.
4. Leaving out a URL to your professional online profile – Instead of sending a headshot along with your resume, you should include a link to your professional online profiles. This will enable hiring managers to see what you look like after they’ve already spent an appropriate amount of time examining your resume. Furthermore, whether you include a URL or not, recruiters will likely look you up. In fact, 86% of recruiters admit to reviewing candidates’ online profiles, so why not include your URL along with your contact information? This will prevent recruiters from having to guess or mistaking you for someone else.
5. Embedding images or charts. – Avoid adding any embedded tables, pictures, or other images in your resume, as this can confuse the applicant-tracking software and jumble your resume in the system.
